Waris Dirie - Desert dawn

Datum: 2012-03-05 - Tid: 10:57:10

The book ”Desert Dawn” was written by Waris Dirie and Jeanne D´Haem. This is a real story, a biography, about a desert girl who became a fashion model in New York. That girl is Waris Dirie. This is her second book, where she talks about her journey back to find her family in her homeland; Somalia. She ran away at an age of twelve to escape a forced marriage with an old man, and she was gone for twenty years.

She found her family, and lived with them for a week. However, the book is not only about coming home; it is also about people’s attitude and fear to make a change, like “female circumcisions”. Waris suffered a female circumcision in the bushes when she was five years old. While Waris lived in New York, she learned that not everybody is circumcised.

Waris now lectures about female circumcision/female genital mutilation to make people help her to stop the risky and painful ritual which has taken many girls lives, caused by infections.  Female genital mutilation is an operation where the genitals are removed with the goals of inhibiting her sexual feelings; she becomes clean and acceptable.[1]

This book is very emotional and spectacular, since I had no idea of how things were done in a poor African country without any government. The environment, people, thoughts, everything is well explained in the book, and I learned to understand a different way of thinking and living – even though I am not a Muslim as they are in Somalia. I really enjoyed reading this book. It was exciting to find out how different people can live from the way that people do in Europe.

Waris founded her own foundation, “Desert Flower Foundation”, in 2002. The purpose is to support her work as a campaigner and to prevent female genital mutilation.[2] Waris is well-known all over the world as the first announcer of female genital mutilation. No one had ever informed about it in public before; this was all news to the “upper world”, the north part of the world.

Temadag - framtiden
